# How to Choose a Location Without Sharing Your Exact Location

Jamie Ellis 22 July 2026

A reasonable worry on any platform that involves matching is how much of your location it reveals. Rollr.club does not need to know where you are, and it does not show other members your exact location. What it can do is let you choose a location — a country, or a broader region — as a matching filter, without that choice becoming a public pinpoint on a map. Understanding the difference between choosing a location and sharing one is the key to using the feature without giving anything away.

## What the platform actually stores

When you set a location on your profile, what the platform keeps is a country code and, optionally, a city name you entered yourself. It does not collect your GPS coordinates, does not read your device location, and does not triangulate you from your network. The country can be detected from your IP at signup as a convenience, but it is editable, and the city is whatever you choose to type — accurate, approximate, or blank.

What other members see is even less. A match does not see your country or city unless you choose to display it; the default is that location is a matching filter, not a profile field shown to others. You can be matched with someone in the same country as you without them ever learning which country that is, unless you tell them during the call.

This is the core distinction: location is used to sort the queue, not to display you. The platform uses your chosen location to decide who you might match with; it does not broadcast it.

## Choosing a location versus sharing one

Choosing a location means telling the platform "I would like to match with people in this area." Sharing a location means letting other people know where you are. These are different actions with different consequences, and Rollr.club only does the first.

When you choose a country as a filter, the platform uses it to prefer matches in that country. No one on the other end of a call is told "this person is in Germany"; they are simply matched with you because you both fit each other's filters. The location influences the matching without becoming visible information.

This is why you can safely use a location filter even if you would never tell a stranger your real country. The filter does the work privately, and what you reveal in conversation is entirely up to you.

## Why use a location filter at all?

You might wonder why location matters on a random video chat platform at all, since the call is online and distance is irrelevant to whether you can talk. The honest answer is that it matters for two reasons: language and time zone. Matching with someone in a country where you share a language makes the call easier, and matching with someone in a similar time zone means you are both online at the same hours, which makes future calls more likely.

Some members also simply prefer to talk to people from a particular region, for cultural familiarity or because they are travelling there and want to practise the language. None of these reasons require the other person to know where you are; they only require the platform to sort the queue by the area you chose.

## How to set a location that is not exact

If you want the benefits of a location filter without revealing anything precise, the approach is to set the country, and to leave the city blank or set it to a major city that is not yours. The platform does not verify the city against your IP, and it does not require the city to match the country; you are free to set "United Kingdom" with no city, or "United Kingdom" with "London" even if you are in Bristol.

The country filter is what actually sorts the queue; the city is mostly for your own reference and for any profile display you choose. Leaving the city blank loses nothing in matching, because the platform matches on country by default. If you want a regional filter within a country, the platform does not offer one — but you can approximate it by setting a city, though this does not create a city-level match filter.

The key habit is to treat the city field as optional decoration, not as a requirement, and never to put your real neighbourhood, street, or workplace into it. A city you do not live in is harmless; a precise address would not be, and the field is not designed to hold one.

## What a match can and cannot infer

Even though the platform does not show your location, a match can sometimes guess it from context. An accent, a visible landmark out of your window, a mention of the weather or local time, or a reference to a local event can all suggest where you are. None of this comes from the platform; it comes from what you reveal in the call, and it is under your control.

The platform-side protection is that a match cannot use the platform itself to find you. They cannot see your country, cannot see your city, and cannot pull a location history. What they can do is listen to what you say, which is true of any conversation with any stranger anywhere. For more on what your background and words can reveal, What Strangers Learn From Your Video Background (https://rollr.club/blog/what-strangers-learn-from-your-video-background) is the relevant guide.

## Does the platform ever share your location?

No. Rollr.club does not share your location with other members, does not include it in match notifications, and does not display it on any profile another member can see. Your chosen location is used only to sort the queue, and the only people who can see what you set are you and, in the course of their work, the platform's administrators.

The platform also does not sell or pass location data to advertisers or third parties. The country code is a matching input, not a data product. If this ever changes, it would be reflected in the privacy policy, which is the document that governs what the platform does with the information you give it.

## If you do not want to use a location at all

You are not required to set a location. Leaving the country and city blank means the platform matches you without a location filter, which usually means a broader, faster pool of matches from anywhere. For some members this is the preferred setting, because it maximises the chance of a quick match and minimises the information the platform holds.

The trade-off is that matches may be in time zones far from yours, and may not share a language. If you are happy to talk to anyone, anywhere, leaving location blank is the simplest and most private option. If you want the language and time-zone benefits, set a country and leave the city blank.

Location is a matching filter, not a profile display. Set the country for the language and time-zone benefits, leave the city blank or approximate, and never put a precise address into any field.

## What to do if a match asks where you are

Because the platform does not show your location, any question about it in a call is the other person asking you, not the platform telling them. You are free to answer as vaguely as you like — a country, a region, a continent, or "I'd rather not say" — and a vague answer is not a red flag to a reasonable person. Members who enjoy random video chat understand that strangers are cautious, and a polite deflection is usually respected.

If a match presses for a specific city, neighbourhood, or landmark after you have given a vague answer, that is itself useful information. Someone who will not accept a soft boundary on location may not accept softer boundaries on more important things, and it is a reasonable moment to end the call. For when a press becomes a reportable boundary crossing, What to Do When Someone Crosses a Boundary (https://rollr.club/blog/what-to-do-when-someone-crosses-a-boundary) is the relevant guide.

## Choosing without sharing

The design of the location feature is meant to let you use area as a matching tool without it becoming a personal exposure. You choose a location to sort the queue; you do not share a location to be found. Keeping that distinction in mind — and keeping what you reveal in conversation consistent with it — is what lets you enjoy the benefits of regional matching without giving up the privacy that makes random video chat comfortable. For the broader picture of what the platform does and does not know about you, Can Users See Your Location on Rollr.club? (https://rollr.club/blog/can-users-see-your-location-on-rollr) is the companion piece.

Location is a matching tool, not a personal exposure. Set the country for the benefits, leave the city blank or approximate, and keep what you reveal in conversation consistent with the privacy the platform gives you.
