# Why Can't the Other Person Hear Me on Video Chat?

Alex Morgan 5 juli 2026

"They can see me but they can't hear me" is one of the most common video chat problems, and it is almost always a microphone issue rather than a connection one. The causes fall into a short, predictable list: the microphone is muted, the wrong microphone is selected, the browser does not have microphone permission, a Bluetooth device is stealing the audio, or the system microphone switch is off. Working through them in order solves the vast majority of cases in under a minute.

## Check the in-call mute first

The simplest cause is also the most common: your microphone is muted in the call. Look for the microphone icon in the call controls; if it has a line through it, you are muted. Tap it to unmute. Some members accidentally mute themselves when tapping the screen to reveal controls, and the mute persists for the rest of the call without them noticing. This is always the first thing to check, because it costs nothing to verify.

- A muted mic shows a line through the microphone icon in the call controls.
- On some phones, a physical mute switch or button can mute the mic system-wide.
- If you joined with a headset that has a mute button, check that too — a muted headset mutes the call even when the in-call icon shows unmuted.

## Check the microphone permission

If you are not muted, the next most common cause is that the browser does not have permission to use the microphone. The symptom is that the other person sees your video but hears silence, and the call never asked you about the microphone, or you dismissed the prompt. Check the system permission first, then the per-site permission in the browser:

- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → make sure your browser is ON.
- Android: Settings → Privacy → Permission manager → Microphone → allow your browser.
- Windows: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → let apps access the microphone, and allow your browser.
- macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → enable your browser.

After changing a system setting, reload the page so the browser re-requests the microphone. As with the camera, a reload is part of the fix — changing the setting without reloading leaves the call silent.

If the camera works but the microphone does not, treat them as separate permissions. The microphone permission is the one to check, not the camera one, and it can fail on its own.

## The wrong microphone is selected

A device can have several microphones — a built-in mic, a headset mic, a webcam mic, and a Bluetooth earbud mic — and the browser may have picked the wrong one. If the selected microphone is not the one you are actually speaking into, the call picks up silence or faint room noise instead of your voice. Look for a microphone or audio settings menu in the call controls and pick the microphone you are actually using. On desktop, this is often under a settings cog next to the mic icon; on mobile, the built-in microphone is usually correct unless a Bluetooth device is connected.

## Bluetooth devices stealing the audio

A very common and subtle cause: you have Bluetooth earbuds or a smartwatch connected, and the phone is routing the microphone to that device instead of the built-in mic. If your earbuds are in their case, across the room, or simply not near your mouth, the call hears almost nothing even though everything else looks correct. The fix is to disconnect Bluetooth for the call, or to switch the audio input in the call to the phone's built-in microphone. This is easy to miss because the permission and the mute all look fine, and only the audio routing is wrong.

- Disconnect Bluetooth earbuds and see if the other person can hear you.
- If you must use a headset, make sure it is charged, unmuted, and actually on your head.
- On desktop, a USB headset can be the selected input while you speak into the laptop — pick the right device in the audio settings.

## System mute and physical switches

Some laptops have a physical microphone mute button on the keyboard, often with an indicator light. Some phones have a hardware mute switch. If you have ruled out the in-call mute and the permission, check for a hardware mute you may have toggled. On MacBooks, a "Mute" key in the function row can mute the system microphone; on some ThinkPads, a dedicated mic-mute button does the same. These affect every app, not just the browser, so the call will be silent until you un-mute.

## Browser and extension causes

- Privacy extensions can block the microphone the same way they block the camera. Try an incognito window with extensions disabled to test.
- An outdated browser can fail to negotiate audio correctly — install pending updates.
- A VPN or corporate network can occasionally interfere with the audio path, though this is rarer than with video.

If the microphone works in an incognito window but not your normal browser, an extension is almost certainly the culprit. Re-enable extensions one by one to find the one blocking the mic.

## Testing your microphone in seconds

A quick test: open a voice-recorder app on your phone or computer, record a few seconds of speech, and play it back. If you can hear yourself clearly, the microphone works and the problem is in the browser or the call. If the recording is silent or very quiet, the microphone itself is muted, blocked, or routed elsewhere. This ten-second test separates a hardware issue from a software one and saves you from changing the wrong settings.

Record a voice memo and play it back. If you can hear yourself, the mic works and the problem is in the call; if you cannot, the mic is muted, blocked, or routed to another device.

## When the other person is very quiet

Sometimes the question reverses: the other person can hear you, but you can barely hear them. That is usually a speaker or volume issue on your side, not a microphone issue on theirs. Turn up your device volume, check that your speaker is not routed to a Bluetooth device you are not wearing, and make sure you have not lowered the call volume specifically. If their video is also frozen, the connection is the cause rather than the audio, and reloading or ending and rejoining the call is the fix.

## A single path through the fix

One reliable order: check the in-call mute, then check the system microphone permission and reload, then check the per-site permission and reload, then disconnect Bluetooth, then check for a hardware mute, then try an incognito window, then test with a voice recorder. Most cases are solved at the first two or three steps. For one-to-one video chat where you can be heard, try 1-to-1 Video Chat (https://rollr.club/video-chat/1-to-1-video-chat).

A silent microphone is almost always one of a handful of fixable causes. Check the mute, the permission, the selected device, and Bluetooth, and the other person will hear you.
