# Can You Change Matching Preferences Mid-Session?

Jamie Ellis 19 April 2026

A common question once a session is underway is whether the preferences you set before you joined the queue can be changed without ending the session. The short answer is yes — your matching preferences are not locked for the session, and updating them changes who you are matched with on your very next call. The longer answer is that "mid-session" can mean a few different things, and the effect of a change depends on which one you mean.

## What "mid-session" means

On Rollr.club, a session is the period during which you are actively using the platform — either waiting in the queue or on a call. You can be in three states: on a call with someone, waiting in the queue for a match, or paused between matches. A change to your preferences applies differently in each.

If you are on a call, changing your preferences does not interrupt the call. The current call continues until one of you ends it; your new preferences take effect on the next match, not on the one already in progress. This is deliberate — a call in progress is a commitment to the person on the other end, and the platform does not pull you out of it because you edited a setting.

If you are waiting in the queue, a change takes effect immediately. The queue re-evaluates your preferences on the next matching cycle, and any waiting member who no longer fits your updated preferences is skipped. There is no need to leave and rejoin the queue; the update is live.

If you are between matches, the change simply applies to the next time you queue. There is nothing to interrupt, so nothing about the change is delayed.

## How a change affects your current call

The most important thing to understand is that editing your preferences never ends a call you are already on. If you realise mid-call that you would rather be meeting a different gender, the current call is not cut short by your edit; it continues, and you can end it yourself whenever you like. The edit only changes who comes next.

This is the right behaviour for two reasons. First, ending someone's call because you changed a setting would be jarring and rude to the person on the other end, who did nothing wrong. Second, a preference change made during a call is often a reaction to that specific call rather than a considered decision, and letting it act only on the next match gives you a moment to be sure.

If you do want to act on a preference change immediately, the way to do it is to end the current call yourself and then queue with the new preferences. The platform is not going to do that for you, and it should not.

## Why you might want to change mid-session

There are a few honest reasons to change preferences during a session, and a few that are worth resisting. A reasonable change is realising your preference was too narrow — you set it to one gender and, after a few calls, want to widen it. Another is the opposite: you started broad and found you consistently enjoyed calls with one gender more, so you want to narrow. Both are the preference system doing its job.

A change worth resisting is "rage-filtering" — narrowing your preferences drastically after one bad call. One call is not a pattern, and a preference made in reaction to a single bad experience often throws out a lot of good future calls. If a call went badly, the better response is to end it, maybe block or report if the behaviour warranted it, and let the next match come from the preference you actually want, not the one your frustration picked.

Another reason that is usually a mistake is changing preferences to chase a specific person. If you met someone you liked and want to be matched with them again, editing your preferences to try to "find" them does not work — the queue matches on availability and filters, not on identity, and you cannot target a specific member through preferences. Reconnecting, where the platform supports it, is a separate feature.

## Does changing preferences reset your queue position?

No. Your position in the queue is based on when you joined it, not on your preferences. Changing your preferences does not send you to the back of the queue, and it does not give you priority over anyone who joined after you. You keep your place, and the only thing that changes is which waiting members you are eligible to match with.

There is one indirect effect: if your new preferences are narrower, you may wait longer for a match simply because fewer waiting members fit them. This is not a penalty — it is just a smaller pool. Your position is unchanged; the time to your next match depends on how many eligible people are waiting, which is a function of your filter, not your queue seniority.

## Filters versus preferences

It is worth keeping the distinction between your matching preferences (which genders you will accept) and your filters (country, verified-only, and similar narrower criteria). Both can be changed mid-session, and both apply to your next match in the same way. The difference is that filters are optional and some are tier-gated, while preferences are always available.

A common pattern is to start a session with broad filters and narrow them if the matches are not what you wanted. This works the same way as changing preferences: the update is live, your queue position is preserved, and the current call is unaffected. The only cost of narrowing is a potentially longer wait, which is the subject of Why Might a Preferred Match Take Longer to Find? (https://rollr.club/blog/why-might-a-preferred-match-take-longer-to-find).

## What does not change when you edit preferences

A few things stay constant regardless of preference changes. Your gender label — how you appear to others — does not change when you change your matching preference; those are separate fields. Your account, your profile, and your history are untouched. Blocking and reporting you did earlier still apply. And any call in progress continues until it ends naturally or you end it.

This also means you cannot use a preference change to escape a call. If you are on a call you want to leave, the way to leave is to end the call, not to change a setting. The platform will not interpret a preference edit as a request to hang up.

## How often can you change them?

There is no limit on how often you can change your preferences, and no cooldown. You can edit them between every call if you want, and the platform will apply each version to the next match. In practice, members who change preferences every call tend to have a worse time, because each change resets the context they are building about who they actually enjoy talking to — a preference that shifts every five minutes is not really a preference.

A better approach is to set your preferences based on what you actually want, give them a few calls to produce matches, and adjust only when you have enough experience to know the change is right. The platform is patient; there is no need to be reactive.

Changing your preferences is always allowed and always applies to your next match — but it never interrupts a call in progress, never resets your queue position, and never helps you target a specific person.

## Changing your mind is allowed

The platform does not treat a preference change as a mistake to be discouraged. You are allowed to change your mind, to widen or narrow what you are looking for, and to learn from a few calls what you actually want. The only things a change cannot do are end your current call, jump the queue, or find a specific person — and those limits exist to keep the experience fair for everyone you match with. For the companion piece on how the filters themselves work, see How Do Gender Filters Work on Rollr.club? (https://rollr.club/blog/how-do-gender-filters-work-on-rollr).

Changing your mind is allowed, and the platform treats a preference change as a live update to your next match — with limits that exist only to keep the experience fair for the people you match with.
